The Airport was officially opened in 1928 as the "Coatesville Airport" and was owned by the City of Coatesville. Chester County purchased the facility and took beneficial occupancy in 1959. At that time, the Chester County Area Airport Authority was formed and the name changed to the "Chester County Airport". In 1962, in honor of the first Authority chairman, the airport was renamed the "Chester County G. O. Carlson Airport." It has been operated primarily as a General Aviation Facility.

From the Archives....

According to the March 2005 issue of Aviation History Magazine, the Coatesville Airport was a stop on one of the early experimental airmail routes. Notice the airmail envelope found at a flea market and the unspecified newspaper clipping accompanying it.
